National Bureau of Statistics informs that, the higher education institutions network have a total of 29 units including 19 state and 10 non-state institutions. Most of them, mainly 25 units are located in Chişinău municipality and 1 unit each in Balţi, Cahul, Comrat and Taraclia.

    

The number of  65,5 thousand (excluding foreigners) of students was registered at the beginning of the 2017/18 school year, decreasing by 9,2 thousand (12,3%) compared to the previous year. The figures include 55,3 thousand of students within state institutions and represent 84,4% of the total number of students. Compared to the 2016/17 school year, the number of students decreased in both state institutions (by 6,8 thousand persons or 10,9%) and in the private ones (by 2,4 thousand persons or 19,1%). The analysis approach of gender distribution shows a higher proportion of female population (58,1%) than male (41,9%).
