On September 15, the top management of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) held a meeting with Wojciech Paczyński, policy officer for statistics at the Delegation of the European Union (EUD), and Jan Demidovits-Mekelainen, who previously held a similar position at the EUD.
Oleg Cara, General Director of NBS, welcomed the EUD officials, expressing appreciation and gratitude for the various and continued support provided by the European Union and the EUD in particular, for developing the capacities of national institutions and improving the availability and quality of statistical data in line with European standards and best practices.
Jan Demidovits-Mekelainen highlighted the motivation, dedication, and efforts of the NBS team, emphasizing that the institution's activity was positively reflected both in the European Commission's 2024 Enlargement Report and in the bilateral screening process for Chapter 18 "Statistics."
In turn, Mr. Wojciech Paczynski reiterated the European Union's commitment to continue supporting the modernization processes in the field of statistics, highlighting the importance of reliable and comparable statistical data in advancing the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova.
During the discussions, the parties reviewed the main results and progress achieved in the field of official statistics with the support of the European Union and examined the priorities on the Bureau's agenda for the coming period.
It should be noted that, with the support of the European Union, numerous technical assistance projects have been implemented over the years, aimed at strengthening and modernizing the national statistical system.
For example, under the project „Support to the National Bureau of Statistics to conduct the 2024 Population and Housing Census”, the NBS benefited from international expertise, digital solutions for data collection have been implemented, a public information campaign has been carried out, and support has been provided for the processing, analysing, and disseminating of census results.
Currently, the European Union provides technical assistance to the National Bureau of Statistics through the TAIEX programme, an instrument of the European Commission that facilitate the exchange of expertise and best practices between the institutions of EU Member State and partner countries, aimed at strengthening institutional capacities and aligning statistical areas with European standards.
In the context of the new Twinning project "Agricultural Statistics," currently in preparation, technical assistance will be provided to strengthen agricultural statistics in line with EU requirements, including preparation for the 2030 round of the General Agricultural Census.
