The National Bureau of Statistics informs that, in 2025:
the area of green spaces in urban localities amounted to 6.7 thousand hectares, with the municipality of Chișinău holding the largest share of green spaces — approximately 65.8%;
the length of illuminated urban streets amounted to 3.5 thousand km, the lighting coverage rate at the national level being 83.0%.
General-use green spaces occupied the largest area of urban green spaces.
In 2025, the area of green spaces in urban localities amounted to 6.7 thousand hectares, representing 13.6% of the land area within the built-up limits of urban localities (an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2024).
Chișinău and Bălți municipalities held the largest area of green spaces
The distribution of urban green spaces by region shows that 65.8% of the green space area belonged to Chișinău municipality, 15.2% to the Northern region, followed by the Central region – 10.4%, the Southern region – 6.1%, and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia – 2.5%. The top three urban localities with the largest green space areas were Chișinău municipality (4.4 thousand ha), Bălți municipality (0.3 thousand ha), and Călărași town (0.2 thousand ha).
According to data from the National Agency for Land Improvement, in 2025 the land area within the built-up limits of urban localities amounted to 49.5 thousand ha (about 2.5 thousand ha less than in 2024). Thus, the share of green spaces and urban streets (conventionally considered public spaces) in the total built-up area of urban localities accounted for 24.2% (SDG indicator 11.7.1.1), representing an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to 2024.
Urban street lighting
The level of urban street lighting reached about 83% nationwide.
In 2025, similar to the previous year, the total length of urban streets amounted to 4.2 thousand km, while the length of illuminated urban street sections reached 3.5 thousand km. Consequently, the nationwide street lighting coverage rate was 83.0%
However, in 2025 (as in the previous year), in six towns (Cricova, Edineț, Glodeni, Frunză, Bucovăț and Iargara), street lighting coverage remained at up to 50%. Among these, the lowest levels of street lighting were recorded in the towns of Glodeni (29.8%) and Frunză (36.4%).
