Crime situation in the Republic of Moldova in 2024

In 2024, 24.6 thousand crimes were registered on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, which is 2.5% more compared to 2023, but less 6.5% compared to 2020. The crime rate in 2024 accounted for 102 crimes per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to 99 crimes in 2023.

According to the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2024, 24.6 thousand crimes were registered on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, which is 2.5% more compared to 2023, but less 6.5% compared to 2020. The crime rate in 2024 accounted for 102 crimes per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to 99 crimes in 2023. Every fifth crime falls into the category of exceptionally serious, particularly serious, and serious crimes. In 2024, 12.9 thousand victims of crimes were registered. As a result of registered domestic violence crimes in 2024, 926 persons suffered, of whom 70.5% were women. The highest level of crime was registered among men - 92.1%, while women accounted for 7.9% in the number of people who committed crimes.

According to the Agency for Digitalization in Justice and Judicial Administration, the number of convicted persons in the first instance in 2024 accounted for 10.9 thousand, which means that, on average, 30 people were sentenced daily. Compared to 2023, the number of first instance convictions increased by 19.6%. Deprivation of liberty, unpaid work for the benefit of the community and conditional convict are the main punishments applied to those convicted in the first instance.

In 2024, according to the National Penitentiary Administration, there were 5.8 thousand persons in penitentiary institutions, including 1.1 thousand (19.2%) in pre-trial detention and 4.7 thousand persons definitively convicted (80.8%). From the total number of persons in penitentiary institutions, 5.3% were women, and 94.7% - men.
