Higher education institutions. In the 2024/25 study year, there are 16 higher education institutions, of which 12 public higher education institutions (8 units in in the municipality of Chisinau and 1 unit each – in the municipalities of Balti, Cahul, Comrat and the city of Taraclia) and 4 private higher education institutions – all in the municipality of Chisinau (Table 1A in the Annex). In relation to the 2023/24 study year, the number of higher education institutions decreased by 5 units, of which 1 public institution was absorbed by another public higher education institution and 4 private institutions have ceased their activity.

Students enrolled at the beginning of the 2024/25 study year. The number of students in higher education institutions (excluding cycle III - higher doctoral studies) increased by 4.3% in comparison with the 2023/24 study year and amounted to 58.9 thous. Thus, the number of students increased in public higher education institutions (by 5.4% in comparison with the 2023/24 study year) and decreased in private institutions (by 1.3%). Of the total number of students, 84.3% enrolled in public higher education institutions and 15.7% in private ones.
