On September 25, the management of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had a meeting with the mission team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) visiting our country.
During this meeting, the members of the IMF mission were acquainted with the most important achievements of the NBS in macroeconomic statistics, particularly regarding the system of national accounts and consumer price statistics.
It should be noted that, with a view to developing and modernizing official statistics in the field of national accounts and consumer prices, the International Monetary Fund has carried out several technical assistance missions for NBS statisticians in recent years. In particular, the missions have carried out work on the development of supply-use tables, which are an integrated set of macroeconomic indicators characterizing the structure of the economy in a breakdown of activities and products.
Estimates of the unobserved economy were also improved so that they are reflected as fully as possible in the national accounts.
In addition, possibilities have been identified to use new data sources, including data on transactions recorded at cash registers of retail outlets (scanner data) for the calculation of the consumer price index, which is an efficient and reliable method for measuring inflation, widely used in the European Union, etc.
The IMF mission will be visiting Moldova from September 25 to October 6, 2023, and the IMF mission team will hold discussions with the authorities of our country on the fourth review of the program supported by the Extended Fund Facility and the Extended Fund Facility arrangements, as well as on developments and progress achieved in the implementation of the IMF-supported program in the Republic of Moldova.
