Press briefing by Oleg Cara, Director General of the NBS, in the context of the 2024 Population and Housing Census

The Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Oleg Cara, held today, April 12, a press briefing on the conduct of the Population and Housing Census 2024.
During the briefing, Oleg Cara thanked the media for their support in informing the population about the census and promoting this exercise of national importance.
Oleg Cara informed that, at the end of yesterday, April 11, about 65 thousand dwellings and about 127 thousand people were enumerated, noting that the number of the population enumerated includes both people with habitual residence and those without habitual residence. He also noted that the population is largely receptive, which is encouraging.
At the same time, Oleg Cara mentioned about some aspects of the census process. In this context, the NBS Director General also referred to the challenges related to: update of the list of buildings and dwellings, refusal of some enumerators to continue their activity on the ground, etc. In order to ensure the quality of the census, Oleg Cara appealed to the population to clarify the existing questions or to communicate the deviations found at Green Line 0800 800 24 or at the e-mail address moldstat@statistica.gov.md.
The questions in the census questionnaires were another topic addressed during the press briefing. In this context, Oleg Cara came up with several clarifications, stating that the questionnaires were prepared in accordance with the provisions of Article 11 of Law 231/2022 on the Population and Housing Census, following also the international recommendations. The 2004 and 2014 census questionnaires were also taken into account to ensure the comparability of data with previous censuses, as well as the proposals made during round tables, bilateral meetings with civil society representatives, such as ethnocultural associations, the Alliance of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities, organizations working in the field of human rights protection, etc.

At the end of the briefing Oleg Cara brought a message of appreciation to the enumerators and the census staff for their fieldwork. At the same time, the Director General of the NBS encouraged the population to be informed from official and reliable sources, especially the official website of the National Bureau of Statistics www.statistica.gov.md in order to be correctly informed, and to participate in the Census, providing complete and correct answers.
