Cooperation with Statistics Norway

Statistics Norway (SN) and the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova signed on 26 February 2009 the Memorandum of Cooperation on Support for the Development of the Statistical System in Moldova for the years 2009-2012, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Norway, No. MDA 08/015.

The general objective of the project is to support the NBS to improve the efficiency, quality and functioning of the Moldovan statistical system and therefore to strengthen the role of statistics in the country.

Another objective of this project is to fortify the capacities of the NBS in identifying needs and then producing and disseminating statistical information to users within the Government, other public organizations, private business and non-commercial organizations as well as to the general public.

The areas of cooperation were:

  • Population statistics;
  • Business register and statistics;
  • National accounts;
  • Environment statistics;
  • Dissemination;
  • Statistical methods;
  • Information Technology (IT).

As a result of NBS cooperation with the NS the following results have been achieved:

  • the data Centre was created;
  • computer equipment has been procured, which will form the basis for improving the security of the statistical information system;
  • improved dissemination practice and user guidance, i.e. technical and financial support for the launch of the "StatBank" http://statbank.statistica.md;
  • the quality and coverage of statistics in some priority areas was improved;
  • the extension of the use of administrative data for statistical purposes, in particular of the State Population Register, was improved, and human capital was strengthened and improved by financing postgraduate courses in statistics.
  • improve the quality and coverage of statistics in line with international standards and best practices in the areas of: population statistics, national accounts, business statistics, environment statistics.
