October 20, 2020 is an important date for the world of statistics. On this day, the 3rd World Statistics Day is celebrated, with the theme "Connecting the world with data we can trust", an initiative of the United Nations General Assembly. This theme reflects the importance of trust in official data and innovation, the confidence of the public good in national statistical systems. In his letter addressed to the Heads of Governments of 2 September 2020, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres, invited all Member States, the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as the civil society, research institutions, the media and all producers and users of statistics, to contribute to highlighting the value of statistics in order to meet current challenges.
Today, the 10th anniversary of the Professional Day of the Statistician in the Republic of Moldova (RM) is also celebrated and for the 5th time - the European Day of Statistics by the member countries of the European Union, at the initiative of the European Statistical Advisory Committee. (Eurostat).
Overall, the Statistics Day aims to raise the awareness among citizens around the world about the importance, value and power of official statistics.
The importance of the statistical data has been recognized worldwide, serving to develop and evaluate economic and social policies, to inform the broad spectrum of users, thus contributing to ensuring the sustainable development of countries and the democratization of societies.
At the same time, the official Moldovan statistics have proved their ability to serve the society with complex and diverse information. The published statistics correspond to quality standards through relevance, accuracy, punctuality, accessibility, comparability and coherence, this being due to the fact that the National Bureau of Statistics as the central authority in statistics, which leads and coordinates the activity in the field of official statistics in the country is in a continuous process of alignment with European norms and standards in the field.
On this occasion, we present the most significant progress registered by the National Bureau of Statistics in the last 6 years that was possible on the strength of the dedication and professionalism of emplyoees in the statistical field, as well as of the financial and technical assistance from international organizations and development partners.
