The final results of the 2024 Population and Housing Census (PHC), covering demographic, migration, and educational characteristics, were officially disseminated during a public event
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) presented today, August 25, at a public event, the second set of data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census (PHC) on the demographic, migration, and educational characteristics of the population.
The event was attended by representatives of public administration, civil society, academia, the media, and national and international partners.
The results presented referred to the population by age groups, sex, place of residence, development regions, districts/municipalities, population by citizenship, country and place of birth, population by legal marital status, population born in other countries, internal migration of the population, population by highest level of completed education, population by literacy rate, etc.
“Today we present the second set of results from the 2024 Population and Housing Census, which reflects the demographic, migration, and educational characteristics of the population of the Republic of Moldova. We hope that this information will serve as a solid basis for effective public policies and for a better understanding of the social and economic realities in our country. The first dissemination event of the final results was dedicated to geographical characteristics, and in the coming period we will continue to publish other important results. The data are disseminated gradually, to allow the fastest possible dissemination as they become available, but also for a detailed and well-structured analysis of them,” stated Mr. Oleg Cara, Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics, in his opening message.
In turn, Ms. Natalia Plugaru, Deputy Representative of the United Nations Population Fund in our country (UNFPA Moldova), stated: “The 2024 Census is not just a data collection exercise – it is a mirror of our society and a strategic resource for the future. With the support of the European Union and the United Nations, the Republic of Moldova now has solid and internationally comparable data that will guide inclusive public policies and contribute to building a resilient future for all citizens. UNFPA, as a leader in promoting and using demographic data, remains committed to supporting the authorities and partners in strengthening the demographic resilience of the country.”
Main results presented at the event
Estimated resident population (ERP): 2,409.2 thousand persons, of which, broken down by:
By sex: women – 1,271.9 thousand persons (52.8%), men – 1,137.3 thousand persons (47.2%)
- By residence area: urban – 1,119.0 thousand persons (46.4%), rural – 1,290.2 thousand persons (53.6%)
Men per 100 women: 89
Average age in the country: 40.6 years, including in urban areas – 39.1 years, in rural areas – 42.0 years; women – 42.4 years, men – 38.6 years.
Population by working age: below working age – 494.5 thousand (20.5%), of working age – 1,343.1 thousand (55.7%), above working age – 571.7 thousand (23.7%).
Citizenship: Citizens of the Republic of Moldova – 2,383.1 thousand (98.9%), with dual citizenship – 389.3 thousand (16.2%), citizens of other states – 25.8 thousand (1.1%), stateless – 0.3 thousand (0.01%)
Country of birth: born in the Republic of Moldova – 2,301.0 thousand (95.6%), born in other countries – 106.7 thousand (4.4%)
Place of birth: usual place of residence – 1,566.8 thousand (65.1%), her locality in the district/municipality of usual residence – 229.2 thousand (9.5%), another district/municipality than the usual place of residence – 505.0 thousand (21.0%), another country – 106.7 thousand (4.4%)
Legal marital status: never married – 458.9 thousand (23.6%), married – 1,086.6 thousand (55.8%), widowed – 198.8 thousand (10.2%), divorced – 202.1 thousand (10.4%).
Live births per 100 women: 175
Internal migration: 233.3 thousand persons changed their residence at district/municipality level.
Population by lenght of usual residence: since birth – 738.9 thousand (30.8%), 12 months and over – 1,497.3 thousand (62.4%), 12 months or less – 163.6 thousand (6.8%)
Educational attainment: without completed schooling and those with preschool education – 50.1 thousand (2.4%), primary education – 193.2 thousand (9.2%), lower secondary education – 478.8 thousand (22.7%) high school – 268.8 thousand (12.8%), secondary technical vocational education – 427.5 thousand (20.3%), post-secondary technical vocational education – 281.4 thousand (13.3%), higher (bachelor's and master's degrees) – 402.3 thousand (19.1%), doctorate and post-doctorate – 5.1 thousand (0.2%).
Literacy rate: literate population among the population aged 10 and over – 2,099.8 thousand (99.6%), illiterate population (persons who cannot read or write) – 7.6 thousand (0.4%).

The National Bureau of Statistics thanks all those who provided support for the successful implementation of the 2024 PHC, those who participated in the census process, including enumerators, national and international partners, and citizens who contributed by providing information according to the census questionnaire.
The final detailed results of the PHC are expected to be published within 18 months after the completion of the census.
