A new educational competition for high school students: the National Statistics Olympiad
To mark Statistician’s Day, observed on 20 October, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) and the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation (ANCE), announces the organisation of the country’s inaugural National Statistics Olympiad, aimed at students in general secondary education. The initiative is also open to cooperation with interested higher education institutions, including the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM).
The initiative aims to encourage students to apply the knowledge acquired at high school to the analysis of statistical data, providing young people with an opportunity to test their knowledge, express their curiosity and discover new areas of interest. The competition builds a bridge between education and the practical application of knowledge, giving students the opportunity to explore official statistical data, formulate questions, compare information and substantiate their conclusions. Practical experience in analysing and using statistical data will help students better understand the dynamics of contemporary society and give them a clearer perspective on how statistical data are used in research, economics, public administration and many other professional fields.
The competition will give students an opportunity to test the knowledge they have acquired at high school about the fundamentals of statistics and data analysis. By working directly with real data, participants will test and strengthen their understanding of how to apply indicators and interpret results, discovering how statistics are used to explain economic and social phenomena. This experience will also enable participants to explore new study and career paths in fields such as statistics, economics and data analysis, where the interpretation of information and analytical thinking are essential.
The National Statistics Olympiad marks a new stage in cooperation between official statistics and education, laying the groundwork for young people to become more familiar with statistical data and how to use them in practice. For students, the competition offers an opportunity to put their knowledge into practice, discover and develop their abilities, and explore new opportunities for study and professional development.
Details of the dates, rules and registration procedure for the National Statistics Olympiad will be announced in due course on the organising institutions’ official pages.
