Elderly population in the Republic of Moldova in 2021
On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, which is marked annually on October 1, National Bureau of Statistics presents information on the situation of the older persons in the Republic of Moldova in 2021.
The world's population is in a continuous process of aging. In 2021, about 771 million people around the world were registered as being of 65 years of age and over. The share of these people in the total population has increased from 6% in 1990 to 10,0% in 2022 and it is estimated that it will increase to 16% by 2050.
A number of 593,0 thousand of people aged 60 and over were living in the Republic of Moldova at the beginning of 2022, which represents 22,8% of the total number of the population with usual residence. About 356,4 thousand (or 60,1%) of the total number of older people were women, every third person was between 60 and 64 years old, and 61,0 thousand (or 10,2%) were people over the age of 80.
