The NBS is conducting trainings for the staff involved in carrying out the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS)

Between 9-26 September, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is conducting training seminars on the implementation of the household statistical survey "European Health Interview Survey" (EHIS) for interviewers. The survey will be carried out in the fourth quarter of 2025. A total of 132 people will be trained within the seminar.

The training agenda includes various organizational aspects, an overview of the EHIS, the survey toolkit, the development of interviewing skills for interviewers, and use of the household data collection application through the Computer-based Personal Interview (CAPI) method. CAPI is a modern method of collecting statistical data that has replaced paper-based collection, whereby interviewers use portable electronic devices to collect data from respondents. The use of this application enhances data quality and security, while also reducing data processing time.

It should be noted that, in addition to assessing the health status of the population, the aim of the survey is to measure individual morbidity (chronic diseases) of the population, the use of medical services (consultations with a family doctor, specialist doctor or dentist, use of alternative medicine, hospitalisation, etc.) and the consumption of medicines. At the same time, through the collected data, the survey provides an opportunity to determine the link between the health status of the population and certain demographic and socio-economic factors (sex, age, marital status, professional status, occupation, etc.) or behavioural factors that have a direct impact on health (such as dietary behaviour, tobacco and alcohol consumption, sports or physical activity). Thus, the EHIS statistical survey involves collecting a wide range of information that cannot be provided by existing data sources, such as information on the health status of people who do not use medical services. One of the important issues addressed by the survey is self-assessment of health status and limitations on usual activities due to health problems—two basic indicators for public health assessment and planning.

The EHIS statistical survey, which will be implemented by the NBS, is carried out in accordance with the methodology applied at EU level within the framework of the European Health Interview Survey wave 4 - EHIS. The implementation of the EHIS in Moldova is stipulated in the 2025–2029 National Program for the Accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union (Chapter 18 "Statistics", Action 24, Annex B), approved by Government Decision No. 306/2025) and in the Statistical Work Program for 2025, approved by Government Decision No. 897/2024 (action 22 in Section 1). Therefore, the implementation of the survey will contribute to the further alignment of the National Statistical System with the EU statistical acquis.

The training seminars are organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Office in the Republic of Moldova, with financial support from the European Union.
