Evolution of consumer prices in the Republic of Moldova in May 20231
National Bureau of Statistics informs that average consumer prices in May 2023 compared to April 2023 increased by about 0,5% (compared to 2,0% in the corresponding month of 2022).
The increase in average consumer prices was determined by the increase in prices at:
- food products by 0,4%, contributing to the increase of average consumer prices by 0,1%;
- non-food goods by 0,3%, contributing to the increase of average consumer prices by 0,1%;
- services provided to the population by 0,8%, contributing to the increase of average consumer prices by 0,2%.
In May 2023 compared to April 2023, among food products, higher increases in average consumer prices were marked for fruit - by 5,4%. At the same time, during the period under review there were price reductions in chicken eggs - by 11,6% and vegetable oil - by 4,7%, vegetables - by 2,1%.
In non-food goods, average consumer prices of footwear - by 0,9%, fuels and combustibles - by 0,7%, clothing - by 0,6%, medicines - by 0,5% increased during the reporting period.
Higher increases in prices (tariffs) for services provided to the population in May 2023 compared to April 2023 were recorded for passenger transport services - by 12,5% (especially for air passenger transport services) and drinking water supply and sewerage services - by 0,9%.
At the same time, in May 2023 compared to April 2023, tariffs for electricity supply services were reduced by 3,2%.
Average consumer prices in May 2023 compared to December 2022 (from the beginning of this year) increased by 5,0%, including food - by 4,5%, non-food goods - by 1,3% and household services - by 11,8%.
Average consumer prices in May 2023 compared to May 2022 (in the last 12 months) increased by 16,3%, including food products by 14,0%, non-food goods by 8,2% and services provided to the population by 33,3%.

1 The information is presented without the data on districts from the left side of the Dniester River and the municipality of Bender.
2 Table 1 includes information on the inflation rate on 3 major groups of goods and services, as well as on some representative groups, aggregated according to the national classification used to calculate the CPI:
- the major group "Food products" includes milling and bakery products, meat, meat preparations and preserves, fish and preserved fish, milk and dairy products, eggs, fats, fresh fruit, other fruit and preserves, vegetables, potatoes, sweets and spices, non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages,
- the major group "Non-food goods" includes cigarettes, fabrics, clothing, knitting, footwear, furniture, means of transport and auto parts, printed publications, fuels and fuels, other goods,
- the major group "Services" includes education and training, communal-housing services, public food, health, car repair services, transport services, other services.
3 Starting from January 2023, the CPI calculations are made using the weighting coefficients calculated on the basis of the data for the year 2021.
