Scope and general objectives

To improve the collection, dissemination and use of statistical information in accordance with national needs (for evidence-based policy making and monitoring) and in line with international standards.

The project aims to strengthen the national statistical system by improving the collection, dissemination and use of socio-economic statistics. It helps to harmonize official statistics with international standards as well as to improve the availability, quality and use of disaggregated statistical data for participatory policy making.

Core activities and components

Project components:

Component 1. Improving the production of multi-dimensional disaggregated statistical data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and other producers of administrative/official statistics and

Component 2.  Improved dissemination of data and statistical capacities of relevant national actors (civil servants at central and local level, CSOs, media, academia) for the effective use of statistical data for the formulation and implementation of evidence-based policy monitoring and analysis.

Main activities:

  • Harmonization of national statistics with EU statistical requirements;
  • Strengthening the capacity of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and line ministries to obtain qualitatively disaggregated data (by sex, age, geographical territory and other dimensions);
  • Facilitate better cooperation on data quality control mechanisms between the NBS and other data producers (central and local governments responsible for official and administrative data);
  • Improving data availability by optimizing data dissemination systems, practices and tools that meet the needs of data users and are presented in a user-friendly format;
  • Implementation of institutional mechanisms for training and development of skills and knowledge for data producers and users (public officials, civil society organizations, media, academia);
  • Improving the appropriate use of available statistical data for participatory policy development, analysis and monitoring.

Achievements
  • Statistical infrastructure (methodologies, system of indicators and reports, statistical tools, information flow) for monitoring national and/or sectoral objectives, strategies, programs revised and harmonized with international/EU standards;
  • Thematic statistical research, on little or no explored topics, in the socio-demographic field, carried out;
  • Country statisticians (NBS, territorial statistical offices) trained in the application of modern methodologies for conducting and evaluating statistical research;
  • Improved and user-oriented statistical data dissemination tools and practices (publications, NBS website, organized events, etc.);
  • New standards and international best practices applied in national statistics due to the strengthening of the skills and capacities of statisticians in the country;
  • Improved knowledge and capacity of different partners (Government, NGOs and academic institutions) to make appropriate use of statistical data in data-driven policy and program development and analysis.
