In its capacity as coordinator of the National Statistical System (NSS) and of Working Group 18 “Statistics” for the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) held, on 2 September, a Workshop on strengthening institutional capacities in the field of official statistics. The event, organized at the NBS, was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice, the Environment Agency, the National Agency for Public Health, and the National Agency for Regulation in Electronic Communications and Information Technology.
The workshop is part of a cycle of activities initiated by the NBS with a view to strengthening the capacities of institutions involved in the production of national official statistics, in order to accelerate the alignment of national statistics with the provisions of the EU acquis in the field of statistics and, for this purpose, to implement the actions set out in the National Programme for the Accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union for the years 2025–2029, approved by Government Decision No. 306/2025 (Chapter 18 “Statistics”), as well as to implement Government Decision No. 51/2022 approving the Regulation on the procedure for the designation of producers of official statistics.
The event addressed topics relevant for the activities of developing and disseminating official statistics, including: statistical legislation, the quality management system, in particular confidentiality and data protection, as well as modern requirements and methods for the dissemination of official statistics.
In his welcoming remarks, the Director General of the NBS, Oleg CARA, noted that “The process of producing and disseminating statistical information must ensure quality at every stage. To this end, it is important that we are guided by the same quality standards, particularly European ones, that we know them and apply them consistently. It is important to have a common understanding of what official statistics are, whose role is particularly important for the proper information of the authorities and of society as a whole, as well as of the international community, about the country’s socio-economic situation and developments, and which also represents a key element in the context of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU.”
We note that, in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 93/2017 on official statistics, the National Bureau of Statistics and the National Bank of Moldova currently hold the status of producers of official statistics. At the same time, by Government Decision No. 51/2022, the Regulation on the procedure for the designation of producers of official statistics was approved, which lays down the criteria and the manner of identifying and granting the status of producer of official statistics to institutions that meet the requirements set out in the national legal framework.
